DEPRESSION

What is depression?

Everybody goes through times of sadness, feeling down and feeling miserable. However, when those unpleasant emotions are so intense that they start to control your life, you may have depression. You are, like many people, depressed, if you feel sad and/or lose your interest in activities you once enjoyed. When you are depressed you may feel like you’re not your usual self, you cry a lot, easily lose your temper or wonder what life is all about.

How common is depression?

Depression is a common and serious illness that has a negative impact on how you feel, the ways you think and how you act.

Dealing with depression

If you suffer from depression, you will be relieved to know that there are a lot of things you can do to help you feel better. Your GP or a psychiatrist may also suggest medication. Different types of psychological treatments could be an alternative to medication or work alongside medication. Psychological treatments that you could benefit from, include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Positive Psychology or Psychotherapy. Psychotherapy helps you to understand the link between your past and the present and can help to resolve the depression.
